How does a blind rivet work?

Understanding Blind Rivets – Installation Guide and KSEET Manufacturing Excellence

Blind rivets, also known as pop rivets, are essential for single-sided fastening—especially in areas where the back of the material is inaccessible. Thanks to their simple yet effective design, blind rivets are widely used across aerospace, automotive, construction, and electronics industries.

🔧 How Blind Rivets Work

A blind rivet consists of two main components:

  • A hollow rivet body (shell)

  • An internal mandrel (pin)

When installed using a rivet gun, the mandrel is pulled through the shell, expanding the body to form a secure joint. The mandrel then breaks off at a pre-set notch, leaving behind a strong and permanent fastening point.

🛠️ Installation Steps

  1. Drill a hole matching the rivet diameter in the materials to be joined.

  2. Insert the rivet so the open end of the shell is exposed on the blind side.

  3. Use a rivet gun to pull the mandrel. As it moves, the shell expands, forming a second head.

  4. The mandrel breaks at its designed breakpoint, securing the joint with consistent clamping force.

This method is quick, vibration-resistant, and does not require access to both sides of the material.
